Starting in 1981 as London International Festival of Theatre, LIFT has presented groundbreaking events and festivals to audiences of over 800,000 including international premieres from 60 countries.

LIFT has been instrumental in placing international theatre on London’s cultural agenda whilst forming active connections to the rest of the world. LIFT events have been staged at over 30 city venues, as well as numerous other sites including streets, disused buildings, parks, open spaces and the river Thames.

Lift Living Archive

The LIFT Living Archive is a unique learning resource for anyone interested in the development of international theatre and performance from 1981 to 2001.

The archive contains documents, photographs, prints, objects and audio and video recordings that trace the first 20 years of LIFT.
